Life-span:

  • A raccoon usually lives 5 years in the wild.

Appearance:

  • A raccoon is gray and has a black face mask and a bushy ringed tail.
  • Its average weight is 5-12 kg.
  • The hind legs are longer than the front legs. This gives them a hunched look when they walk or run!

Behaviour:

  • A raccoon is very mischievous and smart. It’s often called a “masked bandit”!
  • A raccoon is nocturnal. That means it sleeps during the day and is active at night.
  • A raccoon lives in a den which is used for shelter and raising young. A den can be made in different places like a hollow log, a hole in a tree, a chimney or an attic.
  • A raccoon is solitary and likes to be alone.
  • A raccoon hibernates in the winter.
  • A raccoon is very strong and has agile front paws.
  • A raccoon can be very destructive if it gets into your home or property!

Diet:

  • A raccoon will eat just about anything, including fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, insects, eggs and small animals.
  • A raccoon also loves to eat out of garbage cans!

Reproduction:

  • A female raccoon has one litter per year.
  • An average litter has 4 to 5 babies, called “kits”.
  • These babies are very curious!

Other:

  • A raccoon can make more than 50 different sounds which include purrs, chittering sounds, growls, and snorts.
  • Raccoon poop often has round worms which are dangerous!
