Identifying your pet
Identifying your pet is one of the most important things you can do as a pet owner. Why? Well, making sure your pet has a collar and tag will help him return home if he’s ever lost.
You should also have your pet microchipped. A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice, and it’s implanted under your dog or cat’s skin, usually around the neck. The procedure only takes a second, and it doesn’t hurt the animal at all.
The cool thing about a microchip is that it can be programmed with contact information (like your family’s address and phone number), so that if your pet does go missing, and somehow loses his collar and tag, he’ll still be able to be identified. We scan all of our animals when they come in to see if they have a microchip, and if they do, we can call the owners and let them know their animal is with us.
Each year at the OHS, we see thousands of animals who turn up without identification, and they’re never returned home. Don’t let that happen to your pet!
And don’t forget to update your microchip information if you move!
Getting your pet microchipped is quick and easy. Find out about the OHS microchip clinic here.
Did you know that microchips are smaller than a penny!
