Hot Weather Tips
Summer is a fun time of year for you and your pet! Please read the tips below to make sure your furry friend stays happy and safe.
Hot dogs aren't cool!
Never leave your dog alone in the car. When the thermometer soars, a parked car can quickly become a furnace. Opening or lowering the windows does little or nothing to help. With only hot air to breathe, a dog’s normal cooling process — panting — doesn't work. A dog can suffer from heatstroke, brain damage and can die in minutes! The signs of heatstroke include:
- heavy panting (or sudden stopping of panting)
- fast heartbeat
- lack of coordination
- weakness or muscle tremors
- convulsions or vomiting
- glazed eyes
- unconsciousness
Never help a dog in trouble by yourself. It could bite! If you see a dog which is too hot in a car, get help from an adult you trust. You can also call the Ottawa Humane Society at 613-725-1532 for emergencies.
It's against the law to leave a pet alone in a parked car if it puts the animal in danger!
Give me shelter!
If your pet spends lots of time outdoors, make sure there is shelter for protection from the sun/heat. A doghouse needs to be well ventilated and kept in a shaded area. Always give your pet fresh water, too!
Exercise caution!
On hot days, make sure that your pet doesn't over do it with exercise. If he gets too hot, bring him to a cool area. You can slowly lower his temperature by putting his paws in cool water or hosing him down. Call the veterinarian right away!
The best time for exercise is early morning or late evening.
Hot paws hurt!
In summer, the pavement can burn your pet’s paws — keep to the sidewalk or grass.
A close shave!
If you shave your pet, do it at the beginning of summer before it gets too hot outside. Remember - a shaved pet can get a sunburn!
