Life-span:

  • A groundhog usually lives 5 years.

Appearance:

  • A groundhog is mostly grayish brown.
  • Its average weight is 6 kg.
  • A groundhog has short legs with strong claws.
  • It has a stubby tail.
  • A groundhog has two coats of fur. The outside layer keeps water out and the inside layer keeps the body heat in.

Behaviour:

  • A groundhog is solitary and likes to be alone.
  • It usually lives on the ground, but can also climb trees and swim.
  • A groundhog eats all summer to store up fat for the winter. At the first sign of frost, it hibernates underground in a burrow.

Diet:

  • A groundhog will eat grasses, plants, fruits, seeds, and tree bark.

Reproduction:

  • A female groundhog has 4-5 babies in a litter each spring.

Other:

  • A groundhog is also called a woodchuck or whistle pig because it makes a whistling sound when it feels threatened.
