All About Groundhogs!
Life-span:
- A groundhog usually lives 5 years.
Appearance:
- A groundhog is mostly grayish brown.
- Its average weight is 6 kg.
- A groundhog has short legs with strong claws.
- It has a stubby tail.
- A groundhog has two coats of fur. The outside layer keeps water out and the inside layer keeps the body heat in.
Behaviour:
- A groundhog is solitary and likes to be alone.
- It usually lives on the ground, but can also climb trees and swim.
- A groundhog eats all summer to store up fat for the winter. At the first sign of frost, it hibernates underground in a burrow.
Diet:
- A groundhog will eat grasses, plants, fruits, seeds, and tree bark.
Reproduction:
- A female groundhog has 4-5 babies in a litter each spring.
Other:
- A groundhog is also called a woodchuck or whistle pig because it makes a whistling sound when it feels threatened.
