Most people treat their pets with the respect and love they deserve! That's why it's hard to believe that anyone would fail to take good care of an animal or hurt them on purpose. Have you heard about animal neglect or cruelty? Here’s what you need to know.

What is the difference between animal neglect and animal cruelty?

Pet owners who neglect or don’t take proper care of their pets don’t know any better. Believe it or not, some people may keep their dog on a short chain all of the time, or leave their pet in a car on a hot day with the windows rolled up! These cases can often be solved through education. However, an act of cruelty or abuse is done on purpose.

Is there a type of person who is cruel to animals?

A person who is cruel to animals is very angry and feels the need for power. This person may also be a victim of abuse. Most animal abusers are males (adults and teenagers). Children and females may hurt animals, too.

Is there a connection between animal cruelty and human violence?

Yes. People who are cruel to animals often hurt humans as well.

How can we stop animal neglect and cruelty in the community?

The Ottawa Humane Society believes that education is the best way to deal with animal neglect and cruelty.

Is it against the law to abuse an animal in Canada?

Yes. It's against the law to abuse an animal in Canada. Humane societies are expected to enforce the Criminal Code of Canada and their provincial animal protection acts.

What can you do to help a neglected or abused animal?
